RYANN SLAUSON

I work with simple and sometimes salvaged materials such as cardboard, wood, string, and paper to create approximate and earnest attempts at replications of things from the world. My sculptures skew inherent cultural values, personal narratives, and emotional weight attached to mundane and/or discarded items and objects. Emerging from a vernacular soup of fractured memories, found imagery, internet garbage, actual garbage, and daily observation, these sculptures embody a haptic quality oscillating between bitter humor and sloppy celebration. Oftentimes pieces are arranged into pile-like combinations which mirror sidewalk debris, T.G.I. Friday’s, and cluttered childhood closets.

I write poems in an infinite offline Google Doc; a jumble of the everyday with messages and tweets glued to ripped off Blink-182 lyrics. Situated in looping soundscapes, my videos blend poetry with various web-based disposable images into democratic compositions referencing digital experiences and contemporary internet architecture. I focus on isolated moments of intensity, frenetic movement, and intimate gestures from blockbuster science fiction films, Saturday-morning cartoons, commercials, gifs, and outdated animations sifted from various internet sources. Syncing each poem’s pacing to a repetitive soundtrack, these videos weave familiarity with the bizarre, providing the viewer with a hypnotizing and haunting puzzle of pop culture and the personal.
